Workplace Harassment Evidence: Keep It Off Your Work Phone
Something at work is going wrong, and you want a record. Keep it on your own iPhone, not a phone your employer manages. Store it somewhere private, and keep a second copy.

What do I need to know?
- A managed phone is not fully yours. Apple says management tools "may allow access to data or location information on the device".
- Your employer can usually wipe it. Leave the job, or lose the argument, and the phone may go back.
- Records help. Dated screenshots and notes made at the time are easier to rely on than memory.
Is my phone managed by work?
On iOS 27, go to Settings → General → VPN & Device Management. If you see no profiles, no management profile is installed. Apple's personal safety guide explains what these profiles are.
Apple also says to check with your administrator before deleting a work profile. Removing it deletes the settings, apps and data that came with it, and may break your access to work systems.
What should I record?
- What was said or sent. Screenshots of messages, emails and posts, with dates and names showing.
- What happened in person. A short dated note soon after: who, what, where, who else saw it.
- Changes after you spoke up. New shifts, missed promotions, sudden warnings, removed duties.
- Union and colleague chats that you are part of, kept for your own records.
How do I save it safely?
- Use your personal phone. Do not forward evidence to your work email or save it on a work laptop.
- Screenshot whole conversations, with dates in view. Apple's guide to taking a screenshot covers each model.
- Write a dated note after any meeting or incident. Keep it factual.
- Move screenshots out of Photos into one private place, sorted by date. Then delete the originals and empty Recently Deleted.
- Keep a second copy off the phone, in case it is lost or broken.
Before you copy company documents, ask a lawyer or union rep. Taking material you have no right to can cause its own problems.
Who should I talk to?
This page is not legal advice. A union rep, employment lawyer or workers' advice service can tell you what counts as evidence. They can also say what deadlines apply. Ask them early; some time limits are short.
If you are in a union, your rep can often sit in on meetings and help you raise a complaint.
What this doesn't protect against
A vault keeps your records private on your own phone. It does not prove a screenshot is genuine or complete. It cannot recover messages deleted from a work account you no longer reach. Anyone who watches you draw your pattern can open the vault. If you lose both your pattern and recovery phrase, the vault is gone.
Do it with Cryptile
Cryptile keeps screenshots, notes and files in folders inside a vault opened by a pattern, not your passcode. Encrypted iCloud backup with a 9-word recovery phrase gives you a copy you can restore on a new phone.
Cryptile is free for up to 2 vaults, 100 photos and 10 videos, with files, notes and folders unlimited. Plus adds search inside the vault, which reads text in screenshots on the device. It costs $19.99 a year (7-day free trial) or $39.99 once.
