How to Keep Screenshots Private on iPhone
iOS saves every screenshot to your photo library, so it sits next to your other photos and syncs with them. To keep one private, hide it in the Hidden collection, or move it into an encrypted vault and delete the original.

What do I need to know?
- Screenshots are ordinary photos. Apple says they are "automatically saved to your photo library".
- They sync. With iCloud Photos on, a screenshot shows up on every device signed in to your account.
- Deleting is not instant. Deleted items stay in Recently Deleted for 30 days.
Where do my screenshots go?
On iOS 27, open Photos, tap Collections, scroll to Media Types, then tap Screenshots. That list is a quick way to review what you have captured. (Apple)
Can I stop a screenshot from saving?
Yes, for one screenshot at a time. After you take it, the preview opens. Tap the delete button there and it is not saved. Prefer a small thumbnail to the full-screen preview? Go to Settings → General → Screen Capture. Turn off Full-Screen Previews. (Apple)
How do I hide screenshots in Photos?
These steps are for iOS 27. (Apple)
- Open the Screenshots list in Collections.
- Tap Select, then tap the screenshots to hide.
- Tap the More button, then Hide.
- Check Settings → Apps → Photos. Leave Use Face ID on so Hidden stays locked.
- Optional: turn off Show Hidden Album in the same screen.
Hidden screenshots are still in your library and still sync. They are not encrypted separately. See is the Hidden album encrypted?
How do I move screenshots somewhere private?
- Open the screenshot in Photos.
- Tap Share, then choose your vault app. Cryptile appears in the share sheet.
- Open the vault and check the screenshot is there.
- Delete the original in Photos.
- Open Recently Deleted, select it, and delete it there too.
The last step matters. Until it is gone from Recently Deleted, the original is still on your phone and in iCloud. Our guide on what happens when you delete photos explains why.
Which screenshots are worth protecting?
- Banking screens, card numbers and one-time codes.
- Medical results and insurance details.
- Private messages you kept as a record.
- Anything with a password or a recovery code.
For passwords and codes, a password manager is a better home than a picture.
What this doesn't protect against
None of this stops someone else screenshotting your screen, or a recipient screenshotting what you send. iOS cannot block screenshots. A screenshot you already sent or shared stays wherever it went.
Do it with Cryptile
Share a screenshot into Cryptile and it is encrypted with AES-256-GCM under a key made on your phone from your pattern. Then delete the original. There is no account and no server.
Cryptile is free for up to 2 vaults, 100 photos and 10 videos. Plus adds search inside the vault, which reads text in screenshots on the device. It costs $19.99 a year (7-day free trial) or $39.99 once. The price is the same every day.
