How to Permanently Delete Photos on iPhone

Updated

To permanently delete a photo on iPhone, delete it, then delete it again from Recently Deleted. Apple says that once it is gone from that album, you can't get it back.

That clears your library and iCloud Photos. Copies in Shared Albums, other people's libraries and old backups are separate, and each needs its own step.

What do I need to know?

  • One delete is not enough. Deleted photos wait 30 days in Recently Deleted.
  • iCloud Photos follows the delete. Apple says it removes the photo from your other devices signed in to the same Apple Account.
  • Copies elsewhere stay. A photo you shared or backed up is a separate copy.

How do I delete a photo for good? (iOS 27)

These steps are from Apple's iOS 27 guide to deleting photos.

  1. Open Photos, open the photo and tap the Delete button.
  2. Tap Collections.
  3. Under Utilities, tap Recently Deleted, tap View Album, then unlock.
  4. Tap Select and choose the photos.
  5. Tap More, then Delete. To clear everything, use Delete All.

Apple notes that items missing from Recently Deleted may sit in a Recovered collection. Check there too.

Does this delete it from iCloud?

Yes, if iCloud Photos is on. Apple says deleted items are removed "from your iPhone, iCloud, and other devices associated with your Apple Account." There is no separate iCloud copy to clear.

If you only want it off one iPhone, read delete photos from iPhone but keep them in iCloud first.

What about a Shared Library?

Deleting a Shared Library photo deletes it for every participant. Apple's Shared Library guide says the person who added it gets a notification. They can move it from Recently Deleted back to their personal library within 30 days.

So if someone else added the photo, they can bring it back for a month.

What about Shared Albums?

Shared Albums are separate from your library. Deleting the original does not remove the album copy.

Open Photos → Collections → Shared Albums, open the album and delete the photo there. To remove the whole album, tap More, then Delete Shared Album. Apple's Shared Albums guide says photos people saved to their own library stay there.

What about backups?

Apple says an iCloud Backup may include your photos when iCloud Photos is off. A computer backup made earlier keeps what was on the phone then.

Deleting a photo does not reach into those. Delete old backups you no longer need, or accept that they hold a copy.

What else should I check?

  • Messages, WhatsApp and email. Sent photos live in those chats.
  • Other cloud apps. Google Photos or Dropbox may have uploaded it.
  • Other devices. A Mac or iPad not using iCloud Photos keeps its own copy.

What this doesn't protect against

Deleting cannot recall a photo someone else has received, saved or screenshotted. It also does not erase old backups you have forgotten about. Once Recently Deleted is cleared there is no undo, so be sure first.
