Can Someone See Your Recently Deleted Photos?
Yes, for up to 30 days. Deleted photos sit in the Recently Deleted album, and anyone who can unlock it can view or recover them. To stop that, delete them from Recently Deleted too.

What do I need to know?
- Deleting is not the end. Apple says deleted photos stay in Recently Deleted for 30 days.
- The album is locked, but not tightly. Face ID, Touch ID or your passcode opens it.
- iCloud keeps one too. With iCloud Photos, Recently Deleted is also on iCloud.com and your other devices.
Who can open my Recently Deleted album?
Apple says Face ID or Touch ID is required by default on iOS 16, iPadOS 16.1 and later. In practice that means:
- Anyone who knows your passcode. The passcode works where Face ID fails.
- Anyone, if the lock is off. Check the setting below.
- Anyone signed in to your Apple Account on iCloud.com. Apple's iCloud.com steps open Recently Deleted from the sidebar.
Is my Recently Deleted album locked?
Apple's current steps:
- Open Settings, tap Apps, then Photos.
- Make sure Use Face ID is on.
Apple notes that turning it off unlocks both Recently Deleted and the Hidden album. Source: Apple, delete photos on iPhone or iPad.
How do I delete them for good?
From Apple's article:
- Open Photos, then tap Collections.
- Swipe up and tap Recently Deleted under Utilities.
- Tap View Album and unlock with Face ID or Touch ID.
- Tap Select, choose the photos, then tap the More button.
- Tap Delete or Delete All, then confirm.
Apple says: "When you delete a photo or video from this album, you can't get it back." With iCloud Photos, that also clears them from your other devices.
Can they be seen on iCloud.com?
Yes, if you use iCloud Photos. Apple's iCloud.com guide says deleted items can be recovered there for 30 days. Anyone who signs in as you at icloud.com/photos can pick Recently Deleted in the sidebar.
Protect your Apple Account password and turn on two-factor authentication. Then clear the album on your iPhone, which clears it everywhere.
What about a Shared Library?
Apple says anyone in an iCloud Shared Photo Library can delete items. Only the person who added a photo can recover it or delete it permanently. So a photo you added stays recoverable by you, not by whoever deleted it.
What about backups?
A photo deleted today may still be in a backup made last week. This page does not cover how long backups keep photos. See what happens when you restore from a backup.
What this doesn't protect against
Clearing Recently Deleted does not touch copies you sent, shared or saved in other apps. It does not reach older backups either. Someone who already saw or saved a photo keeps what they got.
Do it with Cryptile
A photo you keep in Cryptile never sits in Photos or Recently Deleted. Each one is encrypted with AES-256-GCM under a key made on your device from your pattern. When you import a photo, delete the original, then clear it from Recently Deleted as above.
Cryptile is free for up to 2 vaults, 100 photos and 10 videos. Plus removes the limits and adds search inside the vault and the panic pattern, for $19.99 a year (7-day free trial) or $39.99 once.
