What Happens to My Photos When I Delete Them on iPhone?
A deleted photo moves to Recently Deleted for 30 days. After that, Apple says it is permanently deleted. You can remove it sooner by deleting it from that album too.
What do I need to know?
- Delete is a two-step process. The photo waits in Recently Deleted for 30 days.
- iCloud Photos shares the delete. Removing a photo on one device removes it on your others.
- Permanent means permanent. Apple says you can't get a photo back once it is deleted from Recently Deleted.
Where do deleted photos go?
Apple's wording: "When you delete photos and videos, they go to your Recently Deleted album for 30 days. After 30 days, they'll be permanently deleted."
To delete sooner, open Recently Deleted, select the photos, tap More, then choose Delete or Delete All. Apple notes you can't get them back after that.
What happens if I use iCloud Photos?
Apple says that if you delete photos from one device, they are deleted on your other devices too. This is useful when you want a photo gone everywhere. It is a problem when you delete one by mistake.
A copy kept in an old backup is a separate matter. This page does not cover how long backups keep photos.
Is Recently Deleted private?
Apple says Recently Deleted and Hidden need Face ID or Touch ID by default on iOS 16, iPadOS 16.1 or later. That keeps casual viewers out. Anyone who knows your passcode can still reach them.
How should I move a private photo out of Photos?
- Import the photo into an encrypted vault.
- Delete the original from Photos.
- Open Recently Deleted and delete it there too.
Until step 3, a plain copy remains on your phone, and in iCloud Photos if you use it. Our guide on encrypting photos on iPhone has the full steps. If you are selling the phone, see what to do before you hand it over.

What this doesn't protect against
A vault protects only the photos you put in it. Copies you already shared, sent in messages or saved in other apps stay where they are. A pattern is weaker than a passphrase, so use 8 or more cells. If you lose both the pattern and the 9-word recovery phrase, the vault is gone.
Do it with Cryptile
Cryptile keeps photos out of the Photos library. They are encrypted with AES-256-GCM under a key derived on your device from a drawn pattern. There is no account, no server, and the developer never holds your keys.
Cryptile is free for up to 3 vaults, 100 photos and 10 videos in total. Plus removes the limits and costs $19.99 a year (7-day free trial), $39.99 once, or $1.99 a week.
