Delete Photos From iPhone but Keep Them in iCloud

Updated

With iCloud Photos on, you cannot. Apple says a photo you delete on one device is deleted everywhere. To free space and keep them in iCloud, use Optimize Storage. Or turn off iCloud Photos on that one iPhone first.

What do I need to know?

  • Delete means delete everywhere. With iCloud Photos on, the trash can syncs too.
  • Optimize Storage is usually what people want. Full originals stay in iCloud and the iPhone keeps smaller versions.
  • Turning off sync on one iPhone is safe for iCloud. Turning off iCloud Photos on every device is not.

Why can't I just delete them on the iPhone?

Apple's wording: "When you delete photos and videos on one device, they're deleted everywhere that you use iCloud Photos." You have 30 days to recover them from Recently Deleted. After that they are gone.

How do I free space but keep everything in iCloud?

Use Optimize Storage. These are Apple's steps for iOS 26 and iOS 18.

  1. Open Settings and tap your name.
  2. Tap iCloud → Photos.
  3. Tap iPhone Storage, then choose Optimize Storage.

Apple says this keeps space-saving versions on the iPhone while iCloud holds the full-resolution originals.

How do I remove photos from one iPhone only?

Turn off iCloud Photos on that iPhone. Apple's steps:

  1. Open Settings → your name → iCloud.
  2. Under Saved to iCloud, tap Photos.
  3. Turn off Sync this iPhone.
  4. Choose Remove from iPhone to clear the copies, or Download Photos & Videos to keep them.

Apple says that after this, uploads, edits and deletions "no longer sync between that device and other devices." Your iCloud library stays where it is.

Download your originals somewhere first. Apple notes that optimized photos on the phone are not the original resolution.

What should I avoid?

  • Do not turn off iCloud Photos on every device. Apple says your photos are deleted from iCloud 30 days after you stop using the service.
  • Do not delete on a Mac or iPad that still syncs. That delete reaches iCloud.
  • Do not assume a photo is gone. With sync off, the copy in iCloud is still there.

What if I want a photo off the phone and out of iCloud?

Then delete it while sync is on, and empty Recently Deleted. If you want to keep the photo but out of both places, move it into an encrypted vault first. Our guide to what happens when you delete photos covers the details.

What this doesn't protect against

Keeping a photo in iCloud means it is protected by your iCloud settings. Under standard data protection, Apple holds the keys. Anyone signed in to your Apple Account on another device can see your library. A vault protects only the photos you put in it.

Do it with Cryptile

Cryptile keeps photos outside the Photos library, encrypted with AES-256-GCM under a key made on your device. Its encrypted iCloud backup stores ciphertext, and restoring needs your 9-word recovery phrase.

Cryptile is free for up to 2 vaults, 100 photos and 10 videos in total. Plus removes the limits for $19.99 a year (7-day free trial) or $39.99 once.
