Keeping Protest Photos and Videos Private on iPhone

Updated

You were at a protest and your phone is full of photos and video. Keep the footage somewhere your passcode does not open. Strip location before you post, and blur faces of people who did not agree to be shown.

What do I need to know?

  • Your photos record where you were. Unless you turned it off, the Camera saves location with each photo.
  • Other people are in your shots. A clear face in a public post can cause them real trouble.
  • A phone in someone else's hands is open to them. If they have the passcode or your face, Photos is theirs.

What should I set before I go?

From Apple's personal safety guide and the iOS 27 user guide:

  1. Stop recording location. Settings → Privacy & Security → Location Services → Camera → Never.
  2. Know how to disable Face ID fast. Hold the side button and either volume button for 2 seconds, then press the side button (Apple). The passcode is needed next time.
  3. Use a strong passcode. Settings → Face ID & Passcode → Change Passcode → Passcode Options offers a custom alphanumeric code (Apple).
  4. Take sensitive photos inside a vault app with its own camera, so they never land in Camera Roll.

The EFF's guide to attending a protest covers the rest of your phone, from messaging to what to leave at home.

What should I do with the footage afterwards?

  1. Pick what you need. Delete the rest, then empty Recently Deleted.
  2. Move the keepers into a vault. Select them in Photos, tap Share and send them to the vault. Delete the originals and empty Recently Deleted again.
  3. Keep a backup that only you can open, in case the phone is lost or taken.

Deleted photos otherwise stay in Recently Deleted for 30 days (Apple).

How do I post without exposing anyone?

  • Remove location when you share. In the share sheet, tap Options and turn off Location (Apple). "Location Not Included" then shows.
  • Blur or crop faces of people who did not agree to be shown. Faces, tattoos and distinctive clothes all identify people.
  • Check the background. Street signs, house numbers and car plates say where and who.

What if police want my phone?

The rules on searches and unlocking differ by country and situation. This page is not legal advice. Before you go, find out your rights from a local legal observer group or a lawyer.

What this doesn't protect against

Footage already posted, sent or uploaded cannot be pulled back. A vault does not hide that you were there, because phones, cameras and other people record that too. If you are made to unlock the vault, it opens.

Do it with Cryptile

Cryptile's camera saves photos straight into the vault, with GPS off if you choose. The vault opens with a pattern, not your passcode or face. Encrypted iCloud backup keeps a copy that only your 9-word recovery phrase restores.

Cryptile is free for up to 2 vaults, 100 photos and 10 videos. Plus removes the limits for $19.99 a year (7-day free trial) or $39.99 once. The price is the same every day.
