Handing Your iPhone to a Friend or Child: Keep Your Private Photos Private

Updated

Your niece wants to play a game, or a friend wants to show you a photo on your phone. You unlock it and hand it over. For the next few minutes they can open anything you can.

What do I need to know?

  • An unlocked phone shows everything. That includes Photos, the Hidden album and Messages.
  • iOS can limit them to one app. It takes a minute to set up.
  • A vault stays closed. Opening it needs a pattern that is not your passcode.

What can they reach?

  • The full Photos library, including videos.
  • The Hidden album, if the phone is unlocked and you let it open.
  • Messages, Mail and Notes that are not locked.
  • Photo thumbnails inside other apps, such as a chat app's attach button.

How do I limit it before I hand it over?

Use Guided Access. It keeps the phone in one app.

  1. Go to Settings → Accessibility → Guided Access and turn it on.
  2. Set a Guided Access passcode.
  3. Open the app you are lending, such as the game or the camera.
  4. Triple-click the side button, then tap Start.

To end it, triple-click again and enter the Guided Access passcode.

For a quick look, tap Screen Time in Settings and set limits for a child. For a friend, a one-app session is enough.

What if they scroll through Photos anyway?

  • Keep the phone in your hand and turn the screen toward them.
  • Send the photo to their phone instead of lending yours.
  • Open the photo yourself, then use Guided Access to lock the screen on it.

What should I check afterwards?

  • Look at recent messages for anything sent or deleted.
  • Check Photos → Recently Deleted for anything missing.
  • If they knew your passcode, change it.

What this doesn't protect against

A vault cannot stop someone who sees you draw the pattern. It also does not hide what is in your Messages or Photos library. Guided Access can be ended by anyone who knows its passcode, so keep it different from your phone passcode.

Do it with Cryptile

Cryptile keeps private photos and videos out of your Photos library. Each is encrypted with AES-256-GCM under a key from your pattern, and a different pattern opens a different vault. A decoy vault can hold harmless photos for anyone who asks to see.

Cryptile is free for up to 3 vaults, 100 photos and 10 videos. Plus removes the limits for $19.99 a year (7-day free trial), $39.99 once, or $1.99 a week. The price is the same every day.

Cryptile Send, Files access and shared vaults are coming and are not available yet. Search inside the vault is part of Plus.
