Crossing a Border With Your iPhone: What to Do With Private Photos

Updated

At the border, an officer asks you to unlock your phone and hand it over. Everything in Photos is now in view, and the officer decides what happens next. Decide before you travel what the phone should hold.

What do I need to know?

  • Rules differ by country. Many countries let officers inspect phones at the border. Check the rules for where you are going. This is not legal advice.
  • Your passcode opens Photos and Hidden. Anyone who has it sees both.
  • A vault has its own key. The passcode does not open it.

What should I do before I travel?

  1. Back up. Settings → your name → iCloud → iCloud Backup → Back Up Now.
  2. Decide what travels. Leave sensitive files off the phone if you can.
  3. Move the rest into a vault that does not open with your passcode. Delete the originals, then empty Recently Deleted.
  4. Write down the recovery phrase and keep it somewhere other than the phone.
  5. Turn the phone off before the checkpoint. A restarted iPhone asks for the passcode before Face ID works.
  6. Lock sensitive notes. Tap share, then Lock Note.

What if an officer asks me to unlock the phone?

Stay calm and polite. Ask what the officer needs to see. You can decline, but officers may then keep the device or refuse entry to non-citizens. A lawyer or a travel-rights group can tell you the rules for your passport and route.

Do not lie about what is on the phone. Do not delete anything at the checkpoint.

What should I check afterwards?

  • Check Settings → Face ID & Passcode for any extra face.
  • Check Settings → your name for unknown devices.
  • Change your passcode if it was shared or watched.

What this doesn't protect against

A vault cannot stop an officer from asking you to open it. If you unlock it under pressure, it shows whatever is inside. A decoy vault helps only if you are willing and legally free to open one. Malware planted on a seized phone could read a vault while it is open.

Do it with Cryptile

Cryptile vaults open with a pattern, not the phone's passcode. A different pattern opens a different vault, and nothing lists them. Use 8 or more cells.

Cryptile is free for up to 3 vaults, 100 photos and 10 videos. Plus removes the limits for $19.99 a year (7-day free trial), $39.99 once, or $1.99 a week. The price is the same every day.

Cryptile Send, Files access and shared vaults are coming and are not available yet. Search inside the vault is part of Plus.
