Your Private Photos Showed Up on the Shared iPad

Updated

Someone opened Photos on the iPad at home and found pictures from your iPhone. That is iCloud Photos doing its job. Every device on your Apple Account with Photos sync on gets the same library. Turn sync off on the iPad first, then decide what belongs on your iPhone at all.

What do I need to know?

  • It is sync, not a backup. iCloud Photos keeps one library on every device that has it turned on.
  • Hiding a photo hides it everywhere, but it is still in the library. Apple says hidden photos stay hidden on your other devices too (Apple).
  • Deleting on the iPad deletes everywhere. Do not delete photos there to clean it up.

How do I stop photos syncing to the iPad?

On the iPad, with iPadOS 27, following Apple's steps:

  1. Open Settings, then tap your name.
  2. Tap iCloud. Under Saved to iCloud, tap Photos.
  3. Turn off Sync this iPad.
  4. Choose the Remove from option, not Download Photos & Videos.

Apple says that after this, uploads, edits and deletions no longer sync between the iPad and your other devices. Your photos stay in iCloud and on your iPhone.

Downloading would leave a full copy of your library on the shared iPad.

Should the iPad be on my Apple Account at all?

Photos is only one kind of iCloud data. Apple lists the others, such as Notes, on its iCloud data page. Look through Settings → your name → iCloud on the iPad and turn off anything personal.

If others use it most, think about signing it in to a separate Apple Account. Back up first, and check what you would lose.

What about the Hidden album on the iPad?

Since iPadOS 16.1, Hidden and Recently Deleted need Face ID or Touch ID by default (Apple). If someone else's face or finger is enrolled on the iPad, they can open it. If Use Face ID is off in Settings → Apps → Photos, both albums are unlocked.

What should I do on my iPhone?

  1. Move private photos into a vault that does not sync to other devices.
  2. Delete the originals, then empty Recently Deleted in Collections → Utilities.
  3. Check other devices listed under Settings → your name. Remove any you no longer use.

What this doesn't protect against

Turning off sync does not undo what someone already saw or saved. A vault does not stop photos you take later in the Camera app from syncing. Take private ones in the vault's camera, or move them in quickly. Anyone who knows your vault pattern can open it.

Do it with Cryptile

Cryptile vaults live on the device they were made on and do not sync, so nothing appears on the iPad. The encrypted iCloud backup can only be restored with your 9-word recovery phrase. Photos are encrypted with AES-256-GCM under a key from your pattern.

Cryptile is free for up to 2 vaults, 100 photos and 10 videos. Plus removes the limits for $19.99 a year (7-day free trial) or $39.99 once. The price is the same every day.

Sync between devices, Cryptile Send, Files access and shared vaults are coming and are not available yet.
