How to Hide Photos on iPhone Without Deleting Them

Updated

Hiding a photo in the iPhone Photos app does not delete it. It moves the photo to the Hidden collection, and you can unhide it at any time. iOS does this without any app.

The risk of losing a photo comes later, when you move it into another app and delete the original. Do that in the right order and nothing is lost.

What do I need to know?

  • Hide is not delete. The photo stays in your library and in iCloud Photos, just out of the main grid.
  • Hidden is not encrypted. It opens with Face ID, Touch ID or your passcode.
  • Moving to a vault is copy, then delete. Check the copy opens before you remove the original.

How do I hide a photo without deleting it? (iOS 27)

These steps are from Apple's iOS 27 guide to deleting or hiding photos.

  1. Open Photos and open the photo.
  2. Tap the More button, then tap Hide.
  3. For several photos, tap Select, pick them, tap More, then Hide.

Apple says hidden photos move to the Hidden collection and "You can't view them anywhere else." With iCloud Photos on, they are hidden on all your devices.

How do I get a hidden photo back?

  1. Open Photos and tap Collections.
  2. Under Utilities, tap Hidden, tap View Album, then unlock.
  3. Open the photo, tap More, then Unhide.

If Hidden is missing, see hidden photos disappeared on iPhone.

What about a Shared Library photo?

Hiding a Shared Library photo hides it for every participant, and they can still view or unhide it. That is from Apple's iCloud.com guide.

To take it back for yourself, open the photo, tap More, then Move to Personal Library. Apple says you can do this for photos you contributed. Nothing is deleted.

How do I move a photo to a vault without losing it?

A vault app makes its own copy. The original in Photos stays until you delete it.

  1. Import the photos into the vault app.
  2. Open a few of them inside the vault. Check videos play.
  3. Make sure the vault has a backup and that you have its recovery details written down.
  4. Only then delete the originals from Photos.
  5. Open Recently Deleted in Photos and delete them there too.

Step 5 matters. Apple keeps deleted photos in Recently Deleted for 30 days, and that album opens with your passcode.

What if I want it off this iPhone but not deleted?

That is a different job. With iCloud Photos on, deleting on the iPhone deletes everywhere. See delete photos from iPhone but keep them in iCloud.

What this doesn't protect against

Hide only changes where a photo shows. Anyone with your passcode can open Hidden, unhide or delete. A vault copy is only as safe as its backup: if a vault has no backup and the phone is lost, the photo is gone with it.

Do it with Cryptile

Cryptile imports a copy, encrypts it with AES-256-GCM, and backs it up to your iCloud as ciphertext. A 9-word recovery phrase restores the vault on a new phone, so deleting the Photos original does not leave you with one copy.

Cryptile is free for up to 2 vaults, 100 photos and 10 videos, with encrypted iCloud backup included. Plus adds search inside the vault and the panic pattern for $19.99 a year (7-day free trial) or $39.99 once.
