Hidden Photos Disappeared on iPhone? How to Find Them

Updated

Most of the time the photos are still there and only the Hidden album is out of view. Check the Show Hidden Album setting first, then Recently Deleted.

iOS can fix this without any app. Work through the checks below in order.

What do I need to know?

  • The album can be switched off. Since iOS 14 it can vanish from the Photos app entirely.
  • Deleted photos wait 30 days. They sit in Recently Deleted before they are gone for good.
  • iCloud settings change what you see. A different Apple Account or iCloud Photos turned off can empty the album.

Where is the Hidden album on iOS 18?

Open Photos, tap Collections, swipe up, then tap Hidden in the Utilities section. It asks for Face ID or Touch ID.

If Utilities has no Hidden album, it is switched off.

How do I turn the Hidden album back on?

On iOS 18 and later:

  1. Open Settings → Apps → Photos.
  2. Turn on Show Hidden Album.
  3. Go back to Photos → Collections → Utilities → Hidden.

Apple's Hidden album page has the same steps for iPad and Mac.

What if the Hidden album is empty?

Check these, one at a time:

  1. Recently Deleted. It is in Utilities too. You have 30 days to get a photo back. Tap Select, pick the photo, tap More, then Recover.
  2. Someone unhid them. Unhidden photos go back to the main library. Scroll your library by the date you took them.
  3. iCloud Photos. Go to Settings → your name → iCloud → Photos and check Sync this device is on. With iCloud Photos, hiding and deleting follow you to every device.
  4. The Apple Account. Apple says every device must sign in with the same Apple Account to stay in sync.
  5. Shared Library. If you use one, switch the library view. Apple says photos can sit in the Shared Library instead of your Personal Library.

Apple lists these causes on its missing photos page. The recovery steps are on its delete and recover page.

Can I get them back after 30 days?

Not from Photos. Apple says that once a photo is deleted from Recently Deleted, you can't get it back. See what happens when you delete photos.

The only other place is an older backup that still holds them. Restoring a backup replaces what is on the phone now, so read what happens when you restore first.

How do I stop this happening again?

  • Keep a second copy of photos that matter. One place is not a backup.
  • Remember that anyone with your passcode can switch the Hidden album off.
  • Keep photos that must not be lost or seen somewhere with its own key and backup.

What this doesn't protect against

Hiding a photo only changes where it shows in Photos. Anyone with your passcode can turn the album back on, unhide or delete what is in it. A vault does not bring back photos already deleted from Recently Deleted either.
