Your Wallet Was Stolen: Cancelling Every Card When You Don't Know the Numbers

Updated

Your wallet is gone. Every bank wants the card number before it will cancel anything, and the numbers were in the wallet. Here is the order to work in, and the ten-minute setup that makes the next time a two-minute job.

What do I do right now?

  1. Freeze first, cancel second. Most banking apps have a freeze switch. Use it on every card you can log in to; it stops charges while you find numbers.
  2. Use the app, not the printed number. The bank's app or website usually shows the last four digits and lets you report a card lost without the full number.
  3. Check Apple Wallet. Cards added there show the last four digits and the bank, and the bank can usually find you from that.
  4. Make the calls for cards with no app. Have a recent statement open; the number is on it.
  5. Identification. A passport or driver's licence needs a report to the issuer, and a police report number helps with every replacement.

What would have made this easier?

A photo of the front and back of each card and ID, taken on a quiet afternoon, kept encrypted on the phone. Then the hour on hold becomes: open the vault, read the number, done.

The catch is where the photo lives. A card photo in Camera Roll is a card for anyone who picks up the phone, and it syncs to iCloud and backups. It has to be encrypted, and it has to be encrypted before it is saved.

How do I set it up for next time?

  1. Install Cryptile and draw a pattern. Write down the 9-word recovery phrase.
  2. Make a folder called Cards and one called IDs.
  3. In each folder, tap Add → Take photo with GPS off, and photograph front and back. The photo is encrypted as it is saved and never touches Camera Roll.
  4. Add a note next to the cards with each bank's lost-card phone number.
  5. Lock the vault. Next time, the pattern gets you the numbers in seconds.

The full walk-through is in how to keep photos of your cards and ID encrypted.

What this doesn't protect against

If the phone went with the wallet, the vault is locked and the photos are safe, but you cannot read them either. Keep the recovery phrase on paper at home; on a new phone, it restores the vault from the encrypted iCloud backup. And a vault cannot stop a card from being used before you freeze it. Freeze first.

Do it with Cryptile

Cryptile takes the photo inside the vault and encrypts it on the device. No account, no server, and the developer never holds keys.

Cryptile is free for up to 3 vaults, 100 photos and 10 videos, with notes and folders unlimited and encrypted iCloud backup included. Plus adds search inside the vault, so the last four digits find the card, for $19.99 a year (7-day free trial) or $39.99 once.
