Your Signal Messages Disappear, but Screenshots Don't

Updated

You turned on disappearing messages in Signal, and the chat cleared itself as promised. But the screenshots you took of that chat are still in your Photos app, and maybe in iCloud too.

What do I need to know?

  • The timer only reaches Signal. It deletes messages inside the app. A screenshot is a separate photo that Signal cannot touch.
  • Screenshots land in Photos. If iCloud Photos is on, they upload like any other photo.
  • You cannot stop the other person. Signal says disappearing messages are not meant for a contact who is your adversary.

Why are my screenshots still there?

Signal's own announcement of disappearing messages puts it simply. Someone who wants a record "can always use another camera to take a photo of the screen before the message disappears." The same is true of a screenshot. Once a copy leaves the chat, the timer has no say over it.

On your phone, a screenshot is saved to your photo library. Apple's screenshot guide shows where to find them: Photos, then Collections, Media Types, Screenshots.

How do I find and remove the copies today?

These steps follow Apple's pages for iOS 26 and later.

  1. Open the Screenshots album. Photos → Collections → Media Types → Screenshots.
  2. Select the ones from that chat. Check Favourites and any albums you added them to.
  3. Delete them. They move to Recently Deleted for 30 days.
  4. Empty Recently Deleted. Open it in Utilities, select the photos, then More → Delete. Apple says you cannot get them back after this.
  5. Check other places. Look in Files, Notes and any chat where you forwarded a screenshot.

If you use iCloud Photos, Apple says deleting on one device deletes on your other devices too. See what happens when you delete a photo.

What if I need to keep some of them?

Sometimes a screenshot is the only record of what was said. You may want it for a dispute, a report or your own memory.

  • Keep only the ones you truly need.
  • Move them out of Photos into a place with its own lock.
  • Delete the originals and empty Recently Deleted afterwards.

What about the other person's screenshots?

Those are on their phone, under their control. Our Signal disappearing messages guide covers the timer settings themselves. Nothing on your iPhone can reach them. The practical step is to assume anything you send could be saved. Send the most sensitive things in person, or not at all.

What this doesn't protect against

Cleaning up your own copies does not touch anything the other person saved. It also does not undo an iCloud backup made before you deleted them. A vault protects copies you keep. It cannot stop anyone from taking a new screenshot of what is on screen.

Do it with Cryptile

Share a screenshot into Cryptile from the share sheet, then delete the original from Photos. It is encrypted with AES-256-GCM under a key made on your phone from your pattern. There is no account and no server.

Cryptile is free for up to 2 vaults, 100 photos and 10 videos. Plus removes the limits for $19.99 a year (7-day free trial) or $39.99 once. The price is the same every day.

Cryptile Send, Files access and shared vaults are coming and are not available yet. Search inside the vault is part of Plus.
