A Private Photo Showed on Your Lock Screen: Fix It

Updated

A private photo appeared on your phone where someone else could see it. iOS can fix this without an app. Turn off featured photos, change a shuffling wallpaper, and hide message previews.

What do I need to know?

  • iOS picks photos for you. Featured photos, the Photos widget, Photo Shuffle and StandBy all choose from your library.
  • Hidden photos stay out. A hidden photo can be viewed only in the Hidden album, so it is never featured.
  • Messages can show images too. A notification preview can put a photo on the Lock Screen.

Where did the photo come from?

Think about where you saw it. Each place has its own switch.

  • Lock Screen wallpaper that changes: that is Photo Shuffle.
  • A photo on the Home Screen: that is the Photos widget, which shows featured photos.
  • A photo on a charging phone on its side: that is StandBy.
  • A message banner with a picture: that is a notification preview.

How do I stop it today?

These steps are for iOS 27.

  1. Turn off featured photos. In Photos, tap Collections, then your account at the top right. Turn off Show Featured Content. Apple says this covers memories, featured photos and the widget. (Apple)
  2. Check your wallpaper. Touch and hold the Lock Screen to open the gallery. If a Photo Shuffle wallpaper is set, tap Customize to change it, or swipe up and tap the trash icon. (Apple)
  3. Hide previews. Go to Settings → Notifications → Show Previews and choose When Unlocked or Never. (Apple)
  4. Check StandBy. Swipe left or right to a clock or widget face instead of photos. Or turn StandBy off in Settings → StandBy. (Apple)
  5. Hide the photo itself. Open it in Photos, tap the More button, then Hide.

Short on time? Do steps 1 and 5.

Can I keep Photo Shuffle but stay safe?

Yes. Apple lets you pick an album or Select Photos Manually instead of featured photos. Make a small album of photos you are happy for anyone to see. Then point Photo Shuffle at that album only.

Who could have seen it?

Only people near your phone at that moment. A Lock Screen image is not sent anywhere. If the photo was very personal, a short honest word with the person often settles it.

What this doesn't protect against

These settings change what iOS shows. The photo is still in your library and in iCloud Photos, and anyone with your passcode can find it. The Hidden album opens with the same passcode. A notification can still show a sender's name unless you also turn off Lock Screen alerts for that app.

Do it with Cryptile

Photos in Cryptile are not in your Photos library, so wallpapers, widgets, featured photos and StandBy cannot pick them. Each one is encrypted with AES-256-GCM under a key made on your phone from a pattern you draw.

Cryptile is free for up to 2 vaults, 100 photos and 10 videos. Plus removes the limits for $19.99 a year (7-day free trial) or $39.99 once. The price is the same every day.
