What Happens to My Photos When I Optimize iPhone Storage?

Updated

Your full-resolution photos and videos live in iCloud, and your iPhone keeps space-saving copies when it needs room. Apple says this works as long as you have enough space in iCloud.

What do I need to know?

  • Originals move to iCloud. Apple says full-resolution photos and videos are stored there.
  • Your iPhone keeps smaller copies. Apple says space-saving copies stay on the device, when needed.
  • Room in iCloud matters. Apple says you can store as many as you want, with space.

What does Optimize iPhone Storage do?

It is a setting for iCloud Photos. Apple's storage page says full-resolution photos and videos are stored in iCloud. Space-saving copies are stored on your device when needed.

Apple does not say on that page how the smaller copies are made.

What if iCloud runs out of space?

Then the original is no longer safe to rely on. Apple says that above your limit, new photos will not upload and backups stop. It also says deleted photos are removed at once.

Does Optimize Storage make my photos private?

No. It is a storage setting, not a privacy setting. Your photos are still in your Photos library. Under standard protection, Photos is not among the end-to-end encrypted categories. Apple's encryption page explains this.

Our guide on whether Apple can see your iCloud photos goes through it.

What about photos I keep in a vault app?

A vault app's photos are app data, not library photos. iCloud Photos does not store them, so Optimize Storage does not change them. If the app makes its own backup, that backup needs room in iCloud too.

What this doesn't protect against

Cryptile does not add iCloud space. It cannot recover photos deleted from the library. It protects only what you move into it. A short pattern is weaker than a passphrase, so use 8 or more cells. If you lose both the pattern and the recovery phrase, the vault is gone.

Do it with Cryptile

Cryptile keeps private photos out of your Photos library, encrypted with AES-256-GCM. The key comes from a pattern drawn on your device. Encrypted iCloud backup is included, with no account and no server.

Cryptile is free to start. Plus adds more, and the app tells you when you reach it.
