Can a Photo Vault App Hide Its Icon on iPhone?

Updated

You do not need a special vault app to hide its icon. In iOS 27 you can hide any app you downloaded from the App Store. It moves to a locked Hidden folder.

What do I need to know?

  • iOS hides the icon for you. A hidden app leaves the Home Screen, App Library and search.
  • A hidden icon is not a locked vault. It hides that the app exists, not what is inside.
  • Cryptile does not hide or disguise its own icon. Use the iOS setting instead, or rely on decoy vaults.

How do I hide a vault app on iPhone? (iOS 27)

From Apple's guide to locking or hiding an app:

  1. Touch and hold the app on the Home Screen until the Quick Actions menu opens.
  2. Tap Require Face ID (or Touch ID or Passcode).
  3. Tap Hide and Require Face ID, authenticate, then tap Hide App.

The app moves to the Hidden folder at the bottom of App Library. Apple says hiding removes it "from the Home Screen, App Library, and search results". Locked apps also stay out of notification previews, search and Siri suggestions.

To open it, swipe left past your last Home Screen page, tap Hidden, and authenticate.

What does hiding the icon not hide?

  • The Hidden folder itself. It sits at the bottom of App Library for anyone to see.
  • The list of hidden apps. Apple says you can see it in Settings → Apps → Hidden Apps.
  • Your passcode. The Hidden folder opens with Face ID, Touch ID or your passcode. Anyone who knows the passcode can open it.
  • Other iPhones. Apple says the hidden status "doesn't sync with iCloud", so hide it on each device.

What about vault apps with a fake icon?

Some vault apps look like a calculator or a utility. That can get past a quick glance at your Home Screen. It does not change who can read the photos. If the files inside are not encrypted, a disguise is a costume over an open box.

A disguise can also backfire. Someone who knows the trick will try every calculator on your phone.

Is hiding the app the point?

Usually the real worry is "what if someone makes me open it". A hidden icon does not help then. What helps is a vault that can show a harmless set of photos while the others stay invisible.

In Cryptile, every pattern opens its own vault. A pattern you have not drawn before opens a new, empty one. There is no list of vaults. See decoy vaults.

Does Cryptile hide its icon?

No. Cryptile does not hide or disguise its icon, and it does not pretend to be another app. Alternate icons are coming and are not available yet. If you want the icon out of sight today, use the iOS steps above. They work on Cryptile like any other downloaded app.

What this doesn't protect against

A hidden icon does not stop anyone with your passcode from opening the Hidden folder. Anyone who opens Settings → Apps → Hidden Apps can see what you hid. Hiding the icon also does nothing for photos left in your Camera Roll.

Do it with Cryptile

Cryptile encrypts every file with AES-256-GCM using a key made from your pattern on your device. A different pattern opens a different vault, and there is no vault list.

Cryptile is free for up to 2 vaults, 100 photos and 10 videos, with encrypted iCloud backup included. Plus adds more decoy vaults and the panic pattern for $19.99 a year (7-day free trial) or $39.99 once.
