Is It Safe to Keep a Photo of Your Passport on Your iPhone?
It is safe if the photo is encrypted and not sitting in Camera Roll. In Camera Roll, anyone who unlocks your phone or reaches your iCloud account can read it.

What do I need to know?
- A passport photo is worth keeping. A copy makes replacing a lost passport easier.
- Camera Roll is the wrong place. With iCloud Photos on, it syncs to every device and to iCloud.
- An encrypted vault is the right place. The photo stays unreadable without your pattern.
What can someone do with a passport photo?
The page with your name, number, date of birth and face is enough to attempt identity fraud. That is why a passport copy is more sensitive than a holiday photo. Treat it like the passport itself.
Where should I not keep it?
- Camera Roll. It shows up in search, widgets and Memories.
- The Hidden album. It hides the photo from the grid. It does not encrypt it separately. See is the Hidden album encrypted?
- Email or chat. Copies stay in those accounts long after you send them.
- A shared album. Everyone in it can save the photo.
What are the safer options?
- Apple Wallet. In the US, iOS 26 can add a Digital ID made from your passport. It is accepted at some airport checkpoints. It does not replace the passport for international travel.
- Notes with a lock. Lock Note encrypts the note, but a scan inside is only as private as your passcode. See Notes lock vs a vault app.
- An encrypted vault. The photo is taken inside the app and never enters Camera Roll.
How do I photograph it safely?
- Take the photo inside your vault app, not the Camera app.
- Turn location off for the shot.
- Cover nothing. A copy with parts missing may not be accepted.
- If a copy is already in Camera Roll, add it to the vault, then delete the original.
- Open Recently Deleted in Photos and delete it there too.
Add the photo to a folder named for the trip, or IDs. Delete it when the passport expires.
Should I also keep a paper copy?
Yes, for a trip. Keep it apart from the passport itself. If the phone and the passport are stolen together, the paper copy is your fallback.
What if my phone is lost with the photo on it?
In a vault, the photo stays encrypted. You still need to protect the passport number. If the passport was lost too, report it to your passport office. Check how your country handles a lost or stolen one.
What this doesn't protect against
A vault does not help if someone watches you draw your pattern. It does not help if malware runs on your phone while the vault is open. A pattern is weaker than a long passphrase, so use 8 or more cells. If you lose your pattern and your recovery phrase, the vault is gone.
Do it with Cryptile
Cryptile takes the photo inside the vault. It is encrypted with AES-256-GCM under a key made on your phone from your pattern. There is no account and no server.
Cryptile is free to start, with encrypted iCloud backup included.
