How to Stop WhatsApp Saving Photos to Your Camera Roll
WhatsApp can do this without another app. In WhatsApp, go to Settings → Chats and turn off Save to Photos. WhatsApp's help centre says this setting "is turned on by default", which is why chat photos fill your Camera Roll.

What do I need to know?
- It is on by default. Every photo, video and voice note someone sends you is saved to Photos.
- Each chat can override it. A chat set to Always keeps saving even after you turn the main switch off.
- Turning it off is not retroactive. Photos already saved stay in your library and in iCloud Photos.
How do I stop WhatsApp saving photos from all chats?
These are the iPhone steps from WhatsApp's help page, How to stop WhatsApp from saving media to your phone.
- Open WhatsApp.
- Tap Settings or your profile picture, then tap Chats.
- Turn off Save to Photos.
WhatsApp notes that this change "won't affect any previous auto-download choices" you made for specific chats or groups.
How do I stop it for one chat or group?
From the same WhatsApp page:
- From the Chats tab, open the individual or group chat.
- Tap the contact or group name to see Contact Info or Group Info.
- Tap Save to Photos and choose Never.
The three choices are Default (On), Always and Never. Check any chat you set to Always in the past.
How do I clear WhatsApp photos already in my Camera Roll?
Delete them in Photos. They go to Recently Deleted for 30 days, so clear them there too. If you use iCloud Photos, deleting them removes them from your other devices as well.
Our guide to what happens when you delete photos on iPhone covers each step.
Why does this matter for privacy?
Your Camera Roll is the most shared place on your phone. Anything WhatsApp saves there can sync to an iPad or appear in Memories. Anyone you hand the phone to can see it.
With iCloud Photos on, they also reach every device signed in to your Apple Account. See how to stop iCloud Photos syncing to your other devices.
What this doesn't protect against
This setting only controls copies in Photos. The photos still sit inside WhatsApp, where anyone who opens the app can scroll the chat. WhatsApp's own chat backup is a separate setting, explained in its help centre.
Do it with Cryptile
For chat photos you want to keep private, save them and import them into a Cryptile vault. Then let Cryptile delete the originals from Photos. Each file is encrypted with AES-256-GCM under a key made on your device from your pattern.
Cryptile is free for up to 2 vaults, 100 photos and 10 videos. Plus removes the limits and adds search inside the vault and the panic pattern, for $19.99 a year (7-day free trial) or $39.99 once.
