How to Hide Photos on Instagram and Social Apps
There are two different problems here, and you can fix both without a new app. To hide a photo you already posted on Instagram, archive it. To stop Instagram and other apps reading photos on your phone, limit their access to Photos in iPhone Settings.

What do I need to know?
- Archiving hides a post, it does not delete it. The post keeps its likes and comments, and you can put it back.
- Apps only see the photos you allow. iPhone asks before an app reads your library, and you can change the answer later.
- Hiding a photo in Photos does not hide it from an app. The Hidden album is still part of your library.
How do I hide a post on Instagram?
Instagram calls this Archive. Its help page on archiving a post has the current wording.
- Open Instagram and go to your profile.
- Tap the post you want to hide.
- Tap the menu button at the top right of the post.
- Tap Archive.
The post leaves your profile but keeps its likes and comments. To bring it back, open your archive from the menu on your profile and choose to show it again. It returns to its old spot.
Other apps have similar controls under different names. Look for Archive, Hide from profile or Only me in the post's menu.
How do I stop apps seeing the photos on my iPhone?
Apple lets you change each app's access to Photos at any time. These steps are from Apple's guide to controlling access to information in apps for iOS 27.
- Open Settings → Privacy & Security.
- Tap Photos.
- Tap the app, such as Instagram.
- Change how much access it has, or turn access off.
Apple's personal safety guide says that for photos you can change the access an app has, not just switch it on or off. An app appears in the list only once it has asked.
Do this for every social app, not just one. Messaging apps, photo editors and keyboards with photo features ask too.
What about the Hidden album?
The Hidden album takes a photo out of your main grid. It does not take it out of your library. Our page on whether the Hidden album is encrypted explains what it does and does not do.
If an app has full access to your library, ask yourself whether it needs it. Most apps only need the photo you are about to post.
Where does a vault fit?
A vault keeps photos outside the Photos library. No Photos permission you grant to Instagram reaches them, because they are not there.
In Cryptile, each photo is encrypted with AES-256-GCM under a key made on your device from your pattern. To post one later, open it in the vault and share it on purpose.
What this doesn't protect against
Archiving a post does not remove copies other people saved, screenshotted or reshared. Once a photo has been public, assume a copy exists. A vault cannot help if someone watches you draw your pattern. If you lose both your pattern and your 9-word recovery phrase, the vault is gone.
Do it with Cryptile
Move the photos you would never post into a vault, and leave social apps with access to only what you choose. There is no account and no server.
Cryptile is free for up to 2 vaults, 100 photos and 10 videos. Plus removes the limits and adds the panic pattern and search inside the vault, for $19.99 a year (7-day free trial) or $39.99 once.
