Does CarPlay Show Your Photos on the Car Screen?

Updated

No, not by itself. Apple does not list Photos among CarPlay apps, so your photo library does not appear on the car screen. When you are parked, though, you can send a video to it with AirPlay.

What do I need to know?

  • Your library is not on CarPlay Home. Apple's CarPlay apps are maps, calls, music, calendar, messages and similar.
  • Video can appear when you are not driving. You choose to AirPlay it, in cars that support it.
  • Locked apps stay off CarPlay. Apple says a locked app's information won't appear in CarPlay.

What does CarPlay show?

Apple describes CarPlay as turn-by-turn directions, phone calls, music, your calendar "and more". Compatible third-party apps include audio, navigation, messaging, voice-calling and car-maker apps. Fuel, parking, EV charging and food-ordering apps work too.

Photos is not on that list. These details are from Apple's iOS 27 guide.

Can a video from my phone play on the car screen?

Yes, in some cars, when you are not driving. Apple says you can play a video from a CarPlay video app "or any app that supports AirPlay". You tap AirPlay and pick the CarPlay display. Apple's page talks about video, not still photos.

It only happens if you start it. Nothing from your library is sent to the screen on its own. If the car says video is not available, Apple says it switches to audio only.

How do I keep private things off the car screen?

On iOS 27:

  1. Lock apps you want kept private. Touch and hold the app, tap Require Face ID, then confirm. Apple says a locked app's information won't appear in CarPlay, notification previews, search or Siri suggestions.
  2. Check what you AirPlay. Disconnect from the CarPlay display when you are done.
  3. Mind notifications and messages. Passengers can see the screen too.

What about a shared or borrowed car?

Whoever sits in the car sees what your connected phone shows. Treat the car screen like handing over your phone. Our page on lending your phone has the same habits.

What this doesn't protect against

CarPlay is only one screen. Anyone who unlocks your phone can still open Photos. Locking an app uses your iPhone passcode, so anyone who knows it gets in. Photos you want private from people who know your passcode need a separate lock.

Do it with Cryptile

Cryptile is not a CarPlay app, and its photos sit outside your Photos library. They are encrypted with AES-256-GCM and open only with a pattern you draw.

Cryptile is free for up to 2 vaults, 100 photos and 10 videos in total. Plus removes the limits for $19.99 a year (7-day free trial) or $39.99 once.
