Can a Photo Vault App Be Hacked? What Actually Gets Attacked
Yes, any app can be attacked, and no vault is perfectly safe. What matters is what an attacker gets. If every file is encrypted with a key you hold, stolen files are unreadable without that key.

What do I need to know?
- Stolen files are not the same as opened files. Encrypted data without the key is noise.
- The lock is the usual weak point. A short code or pattern can be guessed if an attacker has the files and the key material.
- Malware on your phone beats any vault. If something reads the screen while the vault is open, encryption does not help.
How do attackers go after a photo vault?
There are three common routes. Each one has a different defence.
- Steal the files. An attacker copies the app's data from a phone or a backup. Strong encryption makes the copy useless without the key.
- Guess the lock. The attacker tries many codes or patterns offline. A longer pattern makes this far slower.
- Watch you. They look over your shoulder or read your screen with malware. No encryption stops that.
Does encryption make a vault safe?
It makes the first route hard, and that is the most important one. An app that only hides photos behind a screen has no such protection. Our guide on how vault apps work explains the difference.
Look for a named cipher, no account and a published threat model. Our page on whether a vault app is safe lists the checks.
How strong is a drawn pattern?
A pattern is weaker than a passphrase. Cryptile's threat model gives rough guessing times for an attacker who holds the files, the device key and a large GPU rig:
- 4 cells: seconds.
- 6 cells: minutes.
- 8 cells: hours.
- 10 cells: about a week.
- 12 or more cells: years.
This case needs the attacker to get past your phone's own protection first. Use 8 cells or more. See pattern, PIN or Face ID for how the options compare.
How does Cryptile reduce the risk?
- AES-256-GCM on every file, thumbnail and index.
- Keys derived on your device from your pattern. There is no account and no server, and the developer never holds your keys.
- Padded sizes and decoy slots, so a copy of the data does not show file sizes or how many vaults you have.
The core is published for audit under a source-available licence, with a threat model and test vectors. Cryptile is new, so it has no long track record yet.
What this doesn't protect against
A pattern is weaker than a passphrase, so short ones fall to offline guessing when an attacker has both the files and your phone's keychain. A jailbroken or infected phone can read a vault while it is open. Someone watching you draw the pattern can copy it. If you lose both the pattern and the 9-word recovery phrase, the vault is gone, because there is no reset.
Do it with Cryptile
Cryptile publishes its threat model, so you can read the limits before you trust it. Pick a pattern of 8 cells or more and write down the recovery phrase.
Cryptile is free for 2 vaults, 100 photos and 10 videos, with files, notes and folders unlimited and encrypted iCloud backup included. Plus removes the limits and adds the panic pattern and search inside the vault, for $19.99 a year (7-day free trial) or $39.99 once. The price is the same every day.
