Is a Photo Vault App Safe? What to Check First
It depends on the app. A vault that encrypts every file with a key only you hold is safe against most threats. A vault that only hides photos behind a screen is not.
What do I need to know?
- Encryption must be real. Ask whether files are scrambled with a named cipher, or just moved out of sight.
- Who holds the key matters. If a company can reset your lock, that company holds a key.
- The app should state its limits. A vendor that claims perfect security is selling a slogan.
How can I tell if a photo vault app is safe?
You cannot test the maths yourself. You can check what the app tells you.
- A named cipher. Look for AES-256-GCM or a similar standard, applied to photos, videos, files and thumbnails.
- No account. An account means a server holds something about you.
- A published threat model. It should say who the app defends against and who it does not.
- Honest recovery. An app with no reset is stricter. It also means you must keep your own backup.
Our guide to choosing a vault app lists six checks in full.
Can a photo vault app be hacked?
Any software can have bugs. Strong encryption makes a stolen copy of the files useless without the key.
The weak point is usually the lock, not the cipher. A short drawn pattern can be guessed offline by someone who has your phone data and enough time. Use 8 or more cells. A longer pattern takes far longer to guess.
Is the Hidden album safer than a vault?
No. The Hidden album is a view filter behind Face ID or your passcode, and the photos stay in your library. Our page on whether the Hidden album is encrypted explains the difference.
What does Cryptile do?
- AES-256-GCM on every file, thumbnail and search index.
- Keys derived on your device from a drawn pattern. There is no account and no server, and the developer never holds your keys.
- Decoy vaults. A different pattern opens a different vault, and there is no vault list. File sizes are padded, and decoy slots hide how many vaults you have.
The core is published for audit under a source-available licence, with a threat model and test vectors. Cryptile is new, so it has no long track record yet.
What this doesn't protect against
A pattern is weaker than a passphrase. Use 8 or more cells, because short patterns fall to offline guessing. If someone watches you draw it, or your phone is compromised while a vault is open, no app can help. If you lose both the pattern and the 9-word recovery phrase, the vault is gone. There is no reset.
Do it with Cryptile
Cryptile is free for up to 3 vaults, 100 photos and 10 videos in total. Files, notes and folders are unlimited. Plus removes the limits. It adds the panic pattern and search inside the vault. It costs $19.99 a year (7-day free trial), $39.99 once, or $1.99 a week.
Cryptile Send, Files-app access, shared vaults and sync are coming and are not available yet.
