Personal Photos on a Work iPhone: What Your Employer Can See
Your employer handed you an iPhone, and over two years your own photos landed on it. Then your job ends and the phone is collected. Move your private photos off it first, and ask IT what the phone allows.

What do I need to know?
- A company phone belongs to the company. It can usually be erased or locked from afar.
- Policies differ. Ask IT what is managed and what is logged.
- Your photos go back with the phone. A passcode you share or hand over opens everything.
What should I do today?
- Ask IT in writing. What is managed, and can they see photos or backups?
- Check Settings → General → VPN & Device Management. A profile there means the company manages the phone.
- Copy personal photos to your own device or account before you hand the phone in.
- Turn off your personal iCloud Photos on it, if policy allows, so nothing new syncs.
- Delete the personal copies and empty Recently Deleted.
- Sign out of your personal Apple Account before returning it.
Do not use a work phone for anything you could not explain to your employer. Carry a second, personal phone if you can.
What if I need to keep working on it?
Keep sensitive photos, scans and notes out of the Photos app. Photos is the place a returned or repaired phone is checked first.
What this doesn't protect against
A vault on a company phone does not hide that the vault exists. A managed phone can be erased, and an erased vault is gone unless it was backed up. Monitoring software installed by a company can see what is on screen while the vault is open. If you lose both your pattern and your recovery phrase, the vault is gone.
Do it with Cryptile
A vault app stores photos outside the Photos library, encrypted under a key from a pattern on your device. There is no account and no server, and a different pattern opens a different vault. Check your employer's policy before installing anything on a company phone.
Cryptile is free for up to 2 vaults, 100 photos and 10 videos, with encrypted iCloud backup included. Plus removes the limits for $19.99 a year (7-day free trial) or $39.99 once. The price is the same every day.
Cryptile Send, Files-app access and shared vaults are coming and are not available yet.
