You Left Your iPhone in a Taxi: What the Next Person Can See
You get home and your iPhone is not in your pocket. A locked iPhone shows a finder very little, but a few things on the Lock Screen still work. Act within the hour.

What do I need to know?
- A locked iPhone keeps Photos closed. The finder needs your passcode or your face.
- The Lock Screen can still leak. Notification previews and some shortcuts work while locked.
- Speed matters. Most of the steps below take under two minutes from another device.
What should I do right now?
Use a friend's phone, a computer, or another Apple device.
- Open Find My. On the web, sign in at icloud.com/find.
- Select your iPhone and check its last location.
- Mark As Lost. This locks the phone and can show a message with a number to call.
- Call your carrier to suspend the line if you think it is gone for good.
- Change your Apple Account password if you think someone has the phone and your passcode.
- Erase it only as a last step. Erasing removes Find My tracking.
What can a finder see on a locked iPhone?
Not your photos, unless they know your passcode. They may see notification previews, such as the first line of a message. They may reach Control Center or the Wallet, depending on your settings.
What should I change afterwards?
On iOS 17.3 and later, turn on Stolen Device Protection in Settings → Face ID & Passcode. Then set Show Previews to When Unlocked in Settings → Notifications. Under Allow Access When Locked, switch off anything you do not need.
What this doesn't protect against
None of this helps if someone watched you type your passcode before the phone went missing. Then the finder can open Photos, Hidden and more. A vault limits that damage only for the photos you moved into it.
Do it with Cryptile
Cryptile opens with a drawn pattern, not your phone passcode. A finder with your passcode still sees an ordinary app and no list of vaults. Files are AES-256-GCM encrypted on the device, and there is no account and no server.
A vault does not stop a lost phone, and it does not hide what is already synced to iCloud Photos or sent in Messages. If you lose both the pattern and the 9-word recovery phrase, the vault is gone.
