You Lost Your iPhone: What a Stranger Can See
You put your phone down at a cafe, and now it is gone. A locked iPhone shows a stranger very little, but the first hour decides how much they can try.

What do I need to know?
- A locked phone hides your photos. Without your passcode, a finder cannot open Photos.
- The risk is someone who knows your passcode. Or one who watched you type it.
- Lost Mode buys time. It locks the phone and shows your number on the screen.
What can a finder see?
Notification previews can appear on the Lock Screen unless you hid them. Control Centre and some widgets may also show information. Photos, Hidden and Notes stay closed until the phone is unlocked.
What should I do in the first hour?
- Mark it as lost. On another device, open Find My, pick the iPhone and choose Mark As Lost. Add a phone number where you can be reached.
- Do not erase it yet. Erasing ends tracking. Wait until you are sure it is gone.
- Change your Apple Account password if you think someone may have your passcode.
- Call your carrier to suspend the line. This stops calls and text codes going to the phone.
- Report it to the police if it was stolen.
What should I do today?
- Turn on Stolen Device Protection in Settings → Face ID & Passcode, once you have a phone again.
- Under Settings → Notifications → Show Previews, choose When Unlocked.
- Use a long passcode, not four digits.
- Back up often, so a lost phone costs you a phone and not your photos.
What this doesn't protect against
Lost Mode and a passcode do nothing if the finder knows the passcode. Someone who watched you enter it in public can open Photos, Hidden and every unlocked note. Find My needs the phone to be online to work.
Do it with Cryptile
Cryptile opens with a drawn pattern, not your passcode. A finder with your passcode still sees an app, not your vault, and a different pattern opens a different vault. Everything in the vault is encrypted with AES-256-GCM under keys made on your device. There is no account and no server.
A vault cannot find or lock a lost phone. It also cannot help if someone sees you draw your pattern. If you lose both the pattern and your 9-word recovery phrase, the vault is gone.
