Caring for a Parent: Their Medical Papers on Your iPhone

Updated

You photographed your mother's insurance card at the pharmacy and her medication list at the doctor's. Now her private details sit in your camera roll, next to your own photos. Move them somewhere that opens only for you. Keep them in one place you can reach in a waiting room.

What do I need to know?

  • These are someone else's records. A parent trusted you with them, so treat them more carefully than your own.
  • Your camera roll is the wrong home. Anyone who unlocks your phone can scroll to them, and iCloud Photos copies them to your other devices.
  • Apple's Health app can share health data directly. A parent with an iPhone can share it with you instead of you photographing screens.

What should I collect?

Keep one folder per parent. Most caregivers end up needing:

  • Insurance and benefit cards, front and back.
  • A current medication list with doses.
  • Recent discharge papers and test results.
  • Signed forms such as a health care proxy, if one exists.
  • Doctor and pharmacy contact details.

How do I scan papers without filling Photos?

These steps are for iOS 27. Apple's scanning page has the full detail.

  1. In the Files app, tap the More button, then Scan Documents.
  2. Hold the page in view. In Auto mode it scans on its own.
  3. Tap Keep Scan, then Done, and choose where to save.
  4. Move the PDF into a vault, then delete the copy in Files.

Already have photos? Move them into the vault, delete the originals, then empty Recently Deleted in Collections → Utilities (Apple).

Can my parent share their Health data with me?

Yes, if they use the Health app on iPhone. On their phone: Health → Sharing → Share with Someone, pick you from their contacts, then choose topics (Apple, iOS 27). They can review or stop sharing at any time from the same screen.

Apple notes that deleting someone from Contacts does not stop sharing. Use Stop Sharing instead.

What about siblings who help too?

Send copies only of what each person needs, and say where you keep the rest. Agree who holds the originals. If a sibling asks for everything, a shared drive with its own access controls may suit better than your phone.

For local services and support, the US Eldercare Locator is run by the Administration for Community Living.

What this doesn't protect against

A vault does not protect copies you send by text or email, or records held by doctors and insurers. It does not decide who is allowed to see your parent's records. If you lose both your pattern and your recovery phrase, the vault cannot be opened.

Do it with Cryptile

Cryptile holds photos, PDFs and notes in folders, encrypted with AES-256-GCM under a key from your pattern. Search inside the vault (Plus) reads text in photos and PDFs on the device, so you can find a policy number fast.

Cryptile is free for up to 2 vaults, 100 photos and 10 videos. Plus removes the limits for $19.99 a year (7-day free trial) or $39.99 once. The price is the same every day.

Cryptile Send, Files access and shared vaults are coming and are not available yet. Each purchase is for one person.
