Is There a Hidden Backup on iPhone? Where Photos Really Go
There is no secret backup on iPhone. But your photos, hidden ones included, can be copied to iCloud Photos, iCloud Backup or a computer.
Hidden photos are treated like any other photo. They go wherever the rest of your library goes.

What do I need to know?
- iCloud Photos or iCloud Backup holds your photos, not both. With iCloud Photos on, they sync there instead of the backup.
- Hidden photos sync too. Apple says photos hidden on one device are hidden on your other devices.
- Apple holds the keys by default. Advanced Data Protection makes both end-to-end encrypted.
Where do my photos get copied?
iCloud Photos. If it is on, every photo and video syncs to iCloud and to your other devices. Hidden photos go with them, still hidden.
iCloud Backup. Apple says it covers the information on your device "that don't already sync to iCloud". Photos are in it only if iCloud Photos is off. Apple's iCloud Backup page lists what is included.
A computer backup. If you have backed up to a Mac or PC, that backup can hold your photos too. It stays until you delete it.
Other apps. Google Photos, Dropbox, Messages and shared albums keep their own copies. Hiding a photo in Photos does not touch those.
Where do hidden photos go?
Into the Hidden album, inside the same library. Nothing moves to a separate, locked store. Apple's missing photos page puts it plainly: "If you use iCloud Photos, the photos that you hide on one device are hidden on your other devices too."
So a hidden photo is in your iCloud Photos, or in your iCloud Backup if iCloud Photos is off. Our page on whether the Hidden album is encrypted covers who can open it.
Can Apple see what is in my backups?
Under standard data protection, Apple says Photos and iCloud Backup are encrypted on its servers but Apple keeps the keys. With Advanced Data Protection, available from iOS 16.2, both become end-to-end encrypted. Apple's data security overview has the full list.

How do I check where my photos are going?
On iOS 18 and later:
- Open Settings, tap your name, then iCloud.
- Tap Photos. If Sync this device is on, your library is in iCloud Photos.
- If it is off, your photos go into iCloud Backup when that is on. Apple's iCloud Backup page explains how to check it.
If you want a photo in neither place, deleting it from Photos and from Recently Deleted is the step. A photo already in an older computer backup stays there until that backup is deleted.
What this doesn't protect against
Turning things off does not reach copies that already exist. Anything you sent, posted or uploaded to another service is outside your iPhone's settings. Someone with your Apple Account password and a trusted device can see what syncs to it.
Do it with Cryptile
Photos inside a Cryptile vault are not part of your Photos library, so iCloud Photos never sees them. Cryptile's own iCloud backup holds the vault encrypted, under keys derived on your device from your pattern.
Cryptile is free for up to 2 vaults, 100 photos and 10 videos, with encrypted iCloud backup included. Plus removes the limits and adds search and the panic pattern. It costs $19.99 a year (7-day free trial) or $39.99 once.
