How to Stop Sharing Photos With Family on iPhone
iOS can do this without an app. Photos reach family through three Apple features: an iCloud Shared Photo Library, shared albums, and a shared device signed in to your Apple Account. Turn off each one you use.
Family Sharing on its own does not share your photo library. Apple notes: "You don't need Family Sharing turned on to set up a shared library."

What do I need to know?
- A Shared Library can add photos automatically. Sharing from Camera, Share Automatically and Share When At Home all do this.
- Leaving does not take back copies. People in a library for over 7 days can copy everything when it is deleted.
- Shared albums are separate. Leaving a Shared Library does not touch them.
How do I stop photos going to the Shared Library automatically?
These steps are from Apple's iOS 27 guide to adding content to a Shared Library.
- Open Photos and tap Collections.
- Tap your account in the top-right corner, then tap Shared Library.
- Tap Sharing from Camera. Turn off Share Automatically and Share When At Home.
- Go back and turn off Shared Library Suggestions.
To remove the Camera's shared library switch, go to Settings → Apps → Photos → Shared Library → Sharing from Camera.
How do I take my own photos back out?
Apple's Shared Library guide lets you move photos you contributed. Open the photo, tap the More button, then tap Move to Personal Library.
How do I leave or delete the Shared Library?
These steps are from Apple's iOS 27 set up or join guide.
- Open Photos and tap Collections.
- Tap your account in the top-right corner, then tap Manage.
- If you set it up, tap Delete Shared Library. If you joined, tap Leave Shared Library.
When you leave, you can copy everything or only what you added. Apple's leave page explains the 7-day rule.
How do I stop sharing a shared album?
These steps are from Apple's Shared Albums page, for iOS 27.
- Open a shared album you created and tap Manage Shared Album.
- Tap a participant, then tap Remove Participant.
- To end the album, tap the More button, then Delete Shared Album.
Apple warns that deleting "permanently deletes all of its photos". Save any you want first. Photos others already saved to their own library stay there.
To stop using shared albums at all, go to Settings → your name → iCloud → Photos → Shared Albums and turn it off.
What about the family iPad?
If a shared iPad or Mac is signed in to your Apple Account, it gets your whole library. Turn off iCloud Photos on that device. See how to stop iCloud Photos syncing to your other devices.
What this doesn't protect against
None of this recalls copies. Anything already saved, downloaded or screenshotted by someone else stays with them. Anyone who knows your iPhone passcode can still open your library.
Do it with Cryptile
Photos you keep in a Cryptile vault are not in your Photos library, so no Shared Library, shared album or synced iPad picks them up. Each vault opens with its own pattern, and there is no account and no server.
Cryptile is free for up to 2 vaults, 100 photos and 10 videos. Plus removes the limits and adds search inside the vault and the panic pattern, for $19.99 a year (7-day free trial) or $39.99 once.
