How to Keep Private Photos Out of iCloud Photos
The iCloud Photos setting is one switch per device, for the whole library. It has no option to leave out one photo or album. To keep a few photos out of it, store them somewhere other than the Photos app.
You can keep iCloud Photos on for everything else. The private photos just need to live in another app with its own storage.

What do I need to know?
- Hiding does not help. Apple says photos you hide on one device are hidden on your other devices too. They still sync.
- Turning sync off moves the problem. With iCloud Photos off, Apple says iCloud Backup may include your photos instead.
- Take private photos outside Photos. A photo that never enters the library never syncs.
Why doesn't the Hidden album stay off iCloud?
Hidden is a view inside the same library. Apple's iOS 27 guide says that with iCloud Photos, any photos you hide are hidden on all your devices. That means they are in iCloud. See are hidden photos saved to iCloud?
How do I keep a photo out without turning iCloud off?
- Move it to an app with its own storage. Import the photo into a vault app, check it opens, then delete it from Photos.
- Clear Recently Deleted. Open Photos → Collections → Recently Deleted, select it and tap Delete. Until then it is still in iCloud.
- Take new private photos inside that app. Use the app's own camera so there is no original in Photos.
- Leave iCloud Photos on. Your everyday photos keep syncing as before.
Check how the other app backs up. Some apps copy readable files into iCloud Backup or their own cloud.
What if I turn off iCloud Photos on one iPhone?
That stops the whole library syncing from that device. Apple's iCloud Photos page covers the steps. iCloud Drive, Notes and other apps keep syncing.
Two catches. Apple says new uploads, edits and deletions stop syncing from that device, so photos already in iCloud stay there. And Apple says iCloud Backup "may include photos and videos" when iCloud Photos is off.
Can I keep everything in iCloud but make it private?
Yes, with Advanced Data Protection. It end-to-end encrypts iCloud Photos so Apple has no key. Read Advanced Data Protection for iCloud Photos before turning it on.
It does not hide photos from anyone who unlocks your phone. For that you still need a separate lock.
What about Shared Library and Shared Albums?
Photos in a Shared Library are seen by every participant. Shared Albums are stored in the organizer's iCloud, and Apple says Shared Albums do not support Advanced Data Protection. Keep private photos out of both.
What this doesn't protect against
Moving a photo out of iCloud Photos does not remove copies already sent, shared or backed up elsewhere. Old iCloud or computer backups may still hold it. Anyone who unlocks your phone can open the other app unless it has its own lock.
Do it with Cryptile
Cryptile keeps photos in vaults outside the Photos library. Its in-app camera saves straight into the vault, encrypted with AES-256-GCM, and its iCloud backup uploads only ciphertext.
Cryptile is free for up to 2 vaults, 100 photos and 10 videos, with encrypted iCloud backup included. Plus adds search inside the vault and the panic pattern for $19.99 a year (7-day free trial) or $39.99 once.
