How to Hide Photos From Spotlight Search on iPhone
Yes, iOS can do this. To keep one photo out of search, hide it in Photos. To keep the Photos app out of Spotlight altogether, turn off Show App in Search for Photos in Settings.

What do I need to know?
- Spotlight can show your photos. Apple says it finds images in your photo library, and text in photos.
- Hidden photos are not searchable. Apple says they can be viewed only in the Hidden album.
- Search settings change results, not storage. The photo is still on the phone and in iCloud Photos.
How do I keep one photo out of search?
On iOS 18 and later:
- Open the photo in Photos.
- Tap the More button, then Hide.
It leaves the library, search in Photos and Spotlight. It stays in the Hidden album, which opens with Face ID, Touch ID or your passcode. Apple's steps: delete or hide photos on iPhone.
How do I stop Photos showing up in Spotlight?
On iOS 27, from Apple's guide to searching with Spotlight:
- Open Settings.
- Tap Search, scroll down, then tap Photos.
- Turn off Show App in Search.
Apple calls this choosing which apps to include in Search. Do the same for Files, Notes or Messages if they hold copies of the photo.
Can someone search my photos from the Lock Screen?
Spotlight opens with a swipe down on the Home Screen or Lock Screen. To stop Today View and Search working while the phone is locked:
- Go to Settings → Face ID & Passcode (or Touch ID & Passcode).
- Under Allow Access When Locked, turn off Today View and Search.
Apple's page on widgets and Today View names this setting.
Do locked apps show up in search?
Not their contents. From iOS 18, you can lock an app with Require Face ID. Its information then stays out of search, Siri suggestions and notification previews. A hidden app also leaves search results. See how to hide apps on iPhone.
What about search inside the Photos app?
Search in Photos looks for dates, places, named people, text and captions. Hidden photos are left out. Names you give people are searchable, so think before naming someone whose photos you want kept quiet.
What this doesn't protect against
These settings change what search shows, nothing else. Anyone who knows your passcode can open Photos and the Hidden album. Apple holds the keys to iCloud Photos unless you turn on Advanced Data Protection.
Do it with Cryptile
Photos in Cryptile are not in the Photos library, so Spotlight and Photos search never see them. Cryptile Plus has its own search inside the vault. Text in your photos is read on the device and kept encrypted.
Cryptile is free for up to 2 vaults, 100 photos and 10 videos. Plus adds search and removes the limits for $19.99 a year (7-day free trial) or $39.99 once. The price is the same every day.
