How to Hide Photos From Apple Watch and Stop the Sync
Apple Watch only shows photos your iPhone syncs to it. Open the Watch app on your iPhone, tap My Watch → Photos, and turn off Photo Syncing. Or keep syncing and pick a harmless album.

What do I need to know?
- Three things sync. One album you choose, Memories and featured photos.
- A new watch syncs Favorites. Apple says it starts with your Favorites album.
- Changes happen on the iPhone. You choose what syncs in the Apple Watch app.
How do I stop photos syncing to Apple Watch?
These steps are from Apple's Apple Watch User Guide, written for watchOS 27.
- Open the Apple Watch app on your iPhone.
- Tap My Watch, then Photos.
- Turn off Photo Syncing.
That stops Memories, featured photos and the album you chose from syncing.
How do I keep photos on the watch but hide some?
Pick an album that holds only what you are happy to show.
- In Photos on your iPhone, make a new album, for example Watch.
- Add the photos you want on your wrist.
- In the Apple Watch app, tap My Watch → Photos → Sync Album, and choose it.
- On the same screen, turn off Sync Memories and Sync Featured Photos.
To take one photo off the watch, Apple says to remove it from the synced album on your iPhone.
Why is a private photo on my watch?
Usually one of two reasons:
- It is a favourite. The default album is Favorites. Un-favourite it, or sync a different album.
- It came from Memories or featured photos. Turn those syncs off, or hide the photo on your iPhone.
Hiding a photo in Photos takes it out of Memories and featured photos. See how to hide photos on iPhone.
How do I check what is on the watch now?
On the watch, open Settings → General → About to see how many photos it holds. Settings → General → Storage shows the space they use.
What this doesn't protect against
These settings control what the watch shows. They do not change your iPhone library or iCloud Photos, where the photos still are. Anyone who knows your iPhone passcode can still find them there.
Do it with Cryptile
Photos in Cryptile are not in your Photos library, so they are never in Favorites, Memories or a synced album. They are encrypted with AES-256-GCM under a key made on your iPhone from a pattern you draw.
Cryptile is free for up to 2 vaults, 100 photos and 10 videos. Plus removes the limits for $19.99 a year (7-day free trial) or $39.99 once. The price is the same every day.
