How to Encrypt a Video on iPhone Before Sending It
iOS has no setting that encrypts a single video file with a password. iMessage between two iPhones is encrypted in transit, and that is the built-in answer. Cryptile keeps the video encrypted on your phone, but sending from inside the app is not available yet.
What do I need to know?
- Encrypted in transit is not encrypted at rest. The video is protected on the way, then sits readable in the recipient's Photos.
- You control your copy, not theirs. Once sent, the other person decides what happens to it.
- Cryptile Send is coming. It is not available yet, so do not plan around it today.
Is iMessage already encrypted?
Between two Apple devices, yes. Apple says iMessage uses end-to-end encryption, so carriers cannot read it. A green bubble (SMS or MMS) is not encrypted that way.
Check the bubble colour before you send. Blue means iMessage. Green means plain text messaging.
How do I send a video more safely on iOS 17 or 18?
- Open Messages and confirm the bubble colour is blue.
- Tap +, choose Photos, and pick the video.
- Send it to a person you trust, on a number you have checked.
- Ask them not to forward or back it up if that matters.
- Delete your copy in Messages if you do not need it. Tap and hold the message, then More, then the bin.
Long videos may arrive compressed. For a full-quality copy, use a shared iCloud link instead. A link works for anyone who holds it, so treat it like the video itself.
How do I keep a video encrypted on my own phone?
The Photos app stores your video readable on the phone. Hidden and Recently Deleted are locked by Face ID or passcode, not encrypted separately. See is the Hidden album encrypted?
With Cryptile:
- Create a vault and draw a pattern of 8 or more cells.
- Write down the 9-word recovery phrase.
- Import the video. It is encrypted with AES-256-GCM as it enters.
- Delete the original in Photos, then in Recently Deleted.
Can I protect the video after sending it?
Not today, on any iPhone setting. Expiry and view-once features are coming in Cryptile Send. Even then, a screenshot or a screen recording cannot be stopped.
What this doesn't protect against
The person you send it to can save, forward or record it. Messages in iCloud and device backups may hold copies. A pattern is weaker than a passphrase. If you lose both the pattern and the recovery phrase, the vault is gone.
Do it with Cryptile
Cryptile derives each vault's key on your device from your pattern. There is no account and no server, and the developer never holds keys.
Cryptile is free for up to 3 vaults, 100 photos and 10 videos, with encrypted iCloud backup included. Plus removes the limits for $19.99 a year (7-day free trial), $39.99 once, or $1.99 a week. Family is $49.99 a year or $99.99 once.
The price is the same every day.
Cryptile Send, Files-app access, shared vaults and sync are coming and are not available yet.
