Can an iPhone Repair Shop See My Photos?

Updated

Yes, they can if your phone is unlocked or you hand over your passcode. Apple's page does not say exactly what a technician can open, so assume everything on the screen is visible.

What do I need to know?

  • Do not share your passcode. Apple says never to give anyone your passcode or account security details.
  • Back up first. Apple tells you to back up your iPhone before service, because it might be erased.
  • Stay with the phone. Apple advises you to remain present while the technician has access to your device.

What does Apple say to do before a repair?

Apple's service preparation page starts with a backup. It then warns against sharing your passcode, Apple Account password or account security details.

It also says to stay present while the technician has access. After service, your device might have been erased. You then restore from an iCloud backup, a computer backup, or set it up as new.

What is Ready for Repair?

Apple describes Ready for Repair as a way to keep the device secure and findable in Find My. It applies during eligible repairs. It needs version 27 or later of iOS. Apple's Ready for Repair page has the steps.

On iOS 26 or earlier, Apple's service page says to turn off Find My instead. Apple does not say on these pages what a technician can see with it on.

Does the Hidden album stop a technician?

Not reliably. Hidden photos are ordinary photos in your library, behind Face ID, Touch ID or your passcode. If you give the shop your passcode, the album opens. Our guide on whether the Hidden album is encrypted explains why.

How do I keep photos out of reach during a repair?

  1. Move sensitive photos into a vault with its own secret. It should not be your phone passcode.
  2. Delete the originals, including from Recently Deleted.
  3. Back up the vault and keep your recovery phrase somewhere other than the phone.
  4. Give the shop a short passcode window. Change your passcode afterwards if you had to share it.

Our phone repair scenario walks through the order.

What this doesn't protect against

A vault cannot help if you unlock it while someone watches. It does not stop a technician seeing the rest of your phone, such as messages or the camera roll. A short pattern is weaker than a passphrase, so use 8 or more cells. If you lose both the pattern and the recovery phrase, the vault is gone.

Do it with Cryptile

Cryptile keeps photos out of your Photos library, encrypted with AES-256-GCM. The key is made on your device from a drawn pattern. Your phone passcode does not open it. There is no account and no server.
