What is the in-app camera in Cryptile?
The in-app camera takes photos from inside an open vault. Each shot is encrypted as it is saved and never enters Camera Roll.
How do I take a photo with the in-app camera?
- Open Cryptile and draw the pattern for the vault you want.
- Open the folder where the photo should go, or stay at the top of the vault.
- Tap Add, then Take photo.
- Check the GPS off button at the top of the screen. Turn location off if the photo should not say where you were.
- Take the photo. It is encrypted and stored in the vault.
- Lock the vault with the lock button. It also locks itself when you leave the app.
The free plan covers the camera. Photos count towards the 100-photo limit.
Why use it instead of the normal Camera app?
A photo taken in the normal Camera app lands in Camera Roll first. From there it can reach iCloud Photos, shared albums and backups. Moving it into a vault later leaves a window where it was readable.
The in-app camera skips that step. The photo goes straight into the vault, so there is no original to delete afterwards.
What does the in-app camera protect against?
- Someone scrolling through your Camera Roll. The photo is never there.
- Photos syncing to iCloud Photos by accident. Nothing was added to the library to sync.
- Location leaks. The GPS button lets you leave the position out of a photo.
- Someone copying the app's files. The stored photo is AES-256-GCM ciphertext, and your pattern is the source of the key.
What does the in-app camera not protect against?
- Photos you took earlier. Anything already in Camera Roll stays there until you move it and delete the original. Check Recently Deleted too.
- Screenshots. A photo on screen can be screenshotted while the vault is open.
- Someone watching you shoot. The camera shows the scene, and so does your screen.
- A short vault pattern. Use 8 or more cells.
- Losing the phone and the recovery phrase. The vault is gone. There is no reset.
Read the security page for the full limits, and pattern unlock for how the key is made.
