What do I get for free?

  • Two vaults. That is enough to set up a real vault and try a decoy.
  • 100 photos and 10 videos. The caps count across all your vaults.
  • Unlimited files, notes and folders. Documents and secure notes are not counted.
  • Encrypted iCloud backup. Backup and the 9-word recovery phrase are included.
  • Pattern unlock, auto-lock and the in-app camera. Nothing is held back from the free plan.

How do I start on the free plan?

  1. Install Cryptile from the App Store and open it.
  2. Draw a pattern. Use 8 or more cells, because a longer pattern is harder to guess.
  3. Write down the 9-word recovery phrase and keep it somewhere safe.
  4. Add photos, videos, files or notes with the add button or the share sheet.
  5. To try a decoy, lock the vault and draw a different pattern. It opens its own vault.

What does the free plan protect against?

  • Anyone who finds the phone. Items are AES-256-GCM ciphertext, and keys come from your pattern on the device.
  • A server breach. There is no account and no server, and the developer never holds your keys.
  • Counting your vaults. Sizes are padded and decoy slots hide how many vaults exist.

What does the free plan not do?

  • It has caps. After 100 photos or 10 videos you need Plus, or you remove items.
  • It has no panic pattern or search. Those are Plus features, along with more decoy vaults.
  • It cannot recover a lost pattern and phrase. If you lose both, the vault is gone.
  • It cannot stop screenshots. Anyone with the vault open can capture what they see.

Plus costs $19.99 a year (7-day free trial) or $39.99 once, for one person. See the Plus page and the security page for details.
